Hodag track and field embraces new training method
RHINELANDER - Track and field teams don't usually go all-out in practice; instead, it's more like a steady 70 or 80 percent effort.

The Rhinelander Hodags subscribe to a different theory: either give it your all or nothing at all.

"The way I teach it is this: we're going to run and we're going to sprint at full speed every day in practice," head coach Aaron Kraemer said. "We don't do sub-max."

Most teams will have runners conserve their energy in training sessions. Head coach Aaron Kraemer doesn't see the point.

"When you're in a sprinting event, you're never going to run less than full speed and you're never going to be asked to run on anything less than sufficient rest," Kraemer said. "So we buy into that."

But sometimes, the runners don't get a lot of rest between sprints, and that's all by design.

"There's a certain amount of rest we're supposed to get in between each run, but we're not getting it," senior Samantha Siefert said. "And that helps our bodies build up an endurance to the lactic acid in our muscles."

All that improvement has shown up on the track. The Hodag boys finished as runners-up in the GNC Indoor Meet and beat 13 other teams in the Ashland Indoor Invitational last week.

"I want to be out there," senior Adam Bloom said. "I want to be part of the team. I want to be competing. I want to be putting myself out there. If I'm doing all that, then there's no reason I shouldn't be one happy person."
That happiness comes from the dedication of going all out.

Rhinelander was supposed to compete against Medford Thursday. That meet was cancelled because of the snow.

The Hodags go to Antigo for a meet Thursday.
