UW-Stevens Point radio station trivia contest celebrates 50 years
STEVENS POINT - "The World's Largest Trivia Contest" hosted by WWSP-90FM, the student radio station at UW-Stevens Point, celebrated its 50th anniversary this weekend.

Gov. Tony Evers even declared the second weekend in April "Trivia Weekend in Wisconsin" to honor the event.

People listening to 90 FM had the chance to form teams and call-in to the radio station to answer trivia questions. Eight questions were presented every hour on-air for more than two straight days. A bank of volunteers answered those calls and recorded team responses.

Stevens Point junior Amber Hederer says 90 FM is the largest student run radio station in the Midwest, but trivia is its real claim to fame.

"Trivia is kind of the thing that we're known for. You go anywhere in the county you say Stephen's Point, odds are somebody might say that's where trivia is, said Hederer.

The contest started in 1969 and grew as the station's signal grew from 10 watts to 30,000 watts of power.

Trivia coordinator Jim Oliva has written questions for the contest since 1979 when he was a student at UWSP.
Oliva says apart from stumping trivia players, he enjoys spending time with the students he mentors.

"The most rewarding part is working with students, and watching them grow in a two semester period of time. The other aspect is all the people I get to meet," said Oliva.

After the points are calculated on Monday, the ten teams with the highest scores win a trophy and a year's worth of bragging rights.

The contest ends Sunday night after 54 continuous hours of game play.
