Sports Spotlight: Rhinelander tennis star amasses wins, baseball cards
RHINELANDER - If you watch Jacob Weddle play tennis, it might seem like it was always his favorite sport.

"I put some time into it and decided I really liked it," Weddle said.

But in his spare time, Weddle pursues a hobby centered around a different spring sport.

Weddle found his first love in baseball. In fact, he started buying and selling baseball cards before he was seven years old alongside his father, Jeff.

"My dad bought baseball cards for me when I was young, so when my son got to be of the age where he was into baseball, I'd buy him some packs here and there," Jeff Weddle said.

As Jacob grew older, his main sport changed from baseball to tennis.

"I really enjoy just the atmosphere," Jacob Weddle said. "I really enjoy just the court and everything about the game."

While Weddle amasses an impressive collection off the court, he racks up the wins on it, going 19-5 as the team's top singles player.

"There's about five matches that were very, very close this year and he has pulled them all out," tennis coach Bob Hiedeman said. "I think he has just discovered that he belongs at (the one-spot.)"

Weddle also enjoys distance running.

It's a pastime he says has helped him improve quickly on the court.

"I've run a couple of half-marathons, so that definitely makes my legs a lot stronger than if I didn't do that," Weddle said.

Make no mistake, though, Weddle now has his heart set on tennis.

"I really liked it," Weddle said. "I liked it better than all the other sports, so I decided to put a lot of time into this and get better."

Weddle finished the season undefeated in Great Northern Conference play.

He and his Hodag teammates will play in the sub-sectional round of the postseason next Monday.
