US Forest Service implements new recreation management plan
NORTHWOODS - Jeff Schweizer doesn't need electricity to camp, but he knows it's a great convenience.

"If it's raining out you got the TV, you got the microwave," said Schweizer.

He and his group of friends used their generators Tuesday night because Franklin Lake Campground in Forest Co. doesn't have direct electrical access.

"Generators make a lot of noise," said Schweizer. "It's nice to have it quiet. When you have electricity you don't have those generators. It's just really enjoyable to be at a campground with electricity."

Chequamegon-Nicolet Recreation, Lands, and Wilderness Program Manager Tim Vetter said noise-free electricity is one of the many enhancements to be added to Franklin Lake Recreation Site. He and others from the Forest Service spent the last few years deciding what makes the National Forest unique.

"We realized our niche is really the quiet rustic campground," said Vetter. "We feel that even though we're adding an amenity like electric in some of those campgrounds. We're gonna be enhancing that experience of that rustic quiet campground."

This year marks a shift, from analysis and planning, to actually making changes to National Forest recreation sites. Electricity will be added to Franklin Lake Campground sites over the next two years.

"We'll have a lot more friends wanting to come too," said Schweizer.
