THREE LAKES - Three Lakes school district gave their state-winning relay team a hero's welcome Monday morning when they arrived back in town.
Ambulances and fire trucks led a miniature parade for Kortnie Volk, Sydney Lurvey, Emily Fink and Kara Sowinski.
Those four girls took the state title in the 400-meter relay in La Crosse last weekend.
Charlie Volk took a lot of pride in the girls' accomplishments, both as an athletic director and as Kortnie's dad.
"It's great to see the community and the school behind their students and athletes," Volk said. "It's a rewarding thing, not only as an athletic director but as a father."
That relay team took third in their heat the day before, then dropped their time by 12 hundredths of a second for the final run.
Head coach Andy Wyss said that race was a result of hard work the girls had put in all year long.
"These four girls work extremely hard," Wyss said. "These are the ones who are putting in a lot of time outside the track in the weight room and things like that. They're good role models and it's hard to go against a state champion."
According to Three Lakes staff, it is only the third state championship in school history.
