Merrill's Dettmering takes state title
MADISON - Merrill's Russell Dettmering knew he could do better than the 73 he shot to win the Antigo regional.

Tuesday, he proved it, finishing with an overall score of seven-under to win the division one state tournament.

"I'm lost for words," Dettmering said. "I've never done anything like this.

Dettmering started day two of the tournament in a five-way tie for second and a stroke back of the leader, but shot a blistering 66 to leave the field well behind him.

"I never thought it would happen," Dettmering said. "I thought maybe 69, maybe 68, but a 66? It's the second time I've done it."

Dettmering may have stolen the show, but he's not the only individual qualifier from the are.

Mosinee's Stanford Swid shot a four-over 76 to start the second day tied for seventh in Division Two, then ended up shooting 10-over through his nine holes Tuesday to finish 14-over par.

"It was just a really big struggle," Swid said. "It was really windy. You had to play the wind. My distances were off, my shot-making was off. Just wasn't as good today, but you take away a lot."

In the team category, Lakeland Union made its third appearance in a row at state after a 21-year drought, something that couldn't have made head coach Scott Howard happier.

"It's great.," Howard said. "Anytime you can play with any of these teams that made it here. There's only eight teams out of over 100 in Division Two that make it here, so every team that makes it is championship caliber."

The T-Birds came up just short of a state title, falling by three strokes to D-2 state champion Edgewood Sacred Heart.

As he held the runner-up trophy, Howard put a positive spin on it, saying, 'hey, we've never gotten one of these before.'
