Jury finds Rhinelander man guilty of trying to have sex with underage girl, sentencing set for July 31
RHINELANDER - A jury took about 2 1/2 hours to find a Rhinelander man guilty of trying to meet up with an underage person for sex.

Anthony Zoncki's one-day jury trial ended Wednesday night with the guilty verdict on the one felony count he faced.

Police arrested Zoncki, 31, in October 2017. According to the criminal complaint, Zoncki had been messaging someone he thought was a girl in Rhinelander. Instead, the "girl" was an undercover agent with the state's Division of Criminal Investigations.

Zoncki eventually agreed to meet the "girl" for sex. He made plans to get condoms at a Rhinelander store and then meet with her at Shopko on October 20.

Police followed Zoncki from his work to Shopko that night.

The agent, still posing as the underage girl, messaged Zoncki to meet her inside the store, but Zoncki never got out of his car. Officers arrested Zoncki as he was trying to leave the parking lot.

Zoncki admitted he originally planned to have sex with the girl, but changed his mind and was "determined not to have any contact with the female."

According to online court records, Zoncki's defense attorney Brian Bennett did not call any witnesses during the trial, which lasted about four hours. Zoncki also waived his right to testify in his own defense.

The jury went into deliberations at 3:20 p.m. The head juror told Judge Michael Bloom they were hung at 4:18 p.m. Bloom found one hour was not long enough to deliberate and not reach a verdict.

The jury told the court for a second time it was still hung at 5:15 p.m. The members went back into deliberations and returned with a guilty verdict around 5:45 p.m.

Bloom set a sentencing date for July 31. Zoncki faces up to 40 years in prison.
