RHINELANDER - School begins throughout Wisconsin in just over a week. But all across the state, schools are facing a shortage of bus drivers.
Bowen's Bus Service in Rhinelander has seen a decline in bus drivers over the past five years.
There are a few reasons for the shortage.
"We've seen a decline in drivers just through our drivers retiring, people moving, and not being able to get people in to apply for those positions to replace them," said Bowen's manager Kim Weyers.
Because of the shortage, Bowen's has had to contract out drivers for some sports trips.
Weyers says it isn't just Rhinelander that is having this problem.
"We're not alone. I mean, every district around us is feeling the push right now, the squeeze for lack of drivers," said Weyers.
Luckily Bowen's has enough drivers to cover the district's 29 routes right now.
Drivers say one of the biggest benefits of the job is watching the kids they drive grow up.
Bowen's is accepting applications for new drivers. You can fill out an application at the location on River Rd. in Rhinelander.
