Former Lakeland runners adjust to life at Marquette
MILWAUKEE - There's snow on the ground in Milwaukee, but it doesn't stop Carley Hintz or Stephanie Mauzer from running.

"You're kind of at the bottom and you have to earn your spot," Hintz said.

The two former Lakeland Union T-Birds are on the same team again at Marquette University, where everything is just a little bit bigger.

"I think it's a little different," Hintz said. "You get to see a lot of different cultures in Milwaukee as opposed to Minocqua, but I like it. I like the exposure."

Mauzer will be competing for the first time during the upcoming indoor season, which means an even busier schedule.

"When next semester comes, we have practice four days a week, and so it's a little bit harder with my schedule just because of labs and things like that," Mauzer said.

Hintz has already run in collegiate races, including last year's BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, which she describes as one of her best experiences so far.

"You could see the New York skyline from the track and just the energy of the team is great," Hintz said. "Everybody is always cheering for you."

For these two former teammates, the more things change, the more they're drawn to each other.

"It was awesome having Carley," Mauzer said. "She really influenced my interest in Marquette and I really started looking at it mainly because of her. She was like 'come to Marquette' and I was like 'OK.'"

Even though they're four hours away from Minocqua, Hintz and Mauzer are still thinking of the school made it all possible.

"I think Lakeland prepared me pretty well," Hintz said.
