Boys & Girls Club distributes over 1,200 free meals to local kids
NORTHWOODS - COVID-19 forced many non-profits to close its doors due to safety concerns, but one local organization's staff is still doing what they can to serve the community.
For about three weeks now, the Boys and Girls Club of Wausau has been providing free dinners and snacks to kids in the Greater Wausau area. Communications Director, Cassandra Ambrosius, said they've now added a second location.

"We started out with distribution at the Carolina S. Mark site. Within the first 10 days, we distributed more than 1,200 meals to families and kids in need," said Ambrosius. "We have since expanded to a second location at John Muir middle school in Wausau."

At both locations, parents can drive up and request however many meals they need for their children, then receive free dinners and snacks. Ambrosius said the boys and girls club extended its reach to begin distributing more than just meals.

"We've been donating hygiene kits on an as needed basis as parents reach out to us and let us know they need shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, things like that," said Ambrosius. "We've also been distributing virtual program kits."

The virtual program kits are designed to keep kids engaged in healthy lifestyle activities, with teen cuisine, and planning the route to success. Ambrosius said that during these tough times, they want to give children access to healthy meals.

"Being able to provide nutritious and balanced meals for kids, it's obviously still important for all of us," said Ambrosius. "The boys and girls club wants to continue to be some type of resource that parents can turn to in their time of need."

Meals are served at both sites on weekdays between 4:30 and 5:30.
