MINOCQUA - At approximately 9:07 PM on July 11, 2020, the Minocqua Police Department responded to a residence on Mercer Lake Road for the report of two missing female canoers.
It was reported that Katelynn Marie Hughes, 25, and Charlotte R Hughes,19, of Marathon, WI left on a canoe from the residence at approximately 3:30 PM heading south on the Tomahawk River towards the Willow Flowage and had not returned.
Measures were taken by family in an attempt to locate the women but were unsuccessful. The women were reported as not having any cell phones or means of communication on them.
Upon arrival, officers immediately started search protocol. Both women were located at approximately 12:59 AM at a cabin on Cedar Falls fire lane along the Tomahawk River.
They were transported to the Minocqua Fire Barn where they were medically assessed by Oneida County Med 5 paramedics and reunited with their family.
Assisting the Minocqua Police Department in the search for Katelynn and Charlotte were the Minocqua Fire and Rescue Department, Newbold Search and Rescue, Arbor Vitae Rescue, Little Rice Fire Search and Rescue, Oneida County Sheriff's Office, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wausau Medivac 650 (air search), Oneida County Med 5 paramedics, and the Woodruff Police Department.
The Minocqua Police Department would like to express their gratitude for all involved in the search efforts which helped return Katelynn and Charlotte back to their family safely.
