Lakeland golf graduate Bengtson makes final summer before college count
MINOCQUA -
Come to the Minocqua County Club range any day of the week and you'll find Kyle Bengtson putting pressure on himself to get better.

"I come out basically every day and find some time to either hit balls or go out and play a couple of holes," Bengtson said.

All those shots prepared him for a hot streak that most golfers could only dream of.

"He just took that next step, and really the sky is the limit for this young man," said Lakeland Union head coach Scott Howard.

Bengtson captured at least a share of first place in four straight tournaments, including a solo title at the Wisconsin Junior PGA Championship, where he shot a final round 68.

"I'm going against, like, most of the best juniors in the state, so it's always good to put yourself up against that competition," Bengtson said. "Winning it was obviously really cool."

"It's extremely rare and significant," Howard said. "Kyle is just a rare talent. He has great knowledge and great skills in all aspects of the game."

Not that you'll ever hear him talk about it.

"He's humble, Kyle, he sure is," Howard said. "But he recognizes how well he's playing."

Even after all those wins, Bengtson can't help reflecting on his time with Lakeland's golf team.

"I mean, next summer I'll be able to come back obviously, but you don't have that spring season to play with the guys as much," Bengtson said.

Bengtson earned a golf scholarship from UW-Green Bay and hopes to play in some college tournaments come this fall.
